The Ritz-Carlton Maui unveils its latest offering, Tales of the Kapa Moe, a brand-new lūʻau and dinner show, debuting on July 18.

“This one-of-a-kind feast for all senses will immerse guests in a magical journey through Hawaiʻi’s captivating stories, culture and traditions,” according to a launch announcement.

Located in the newly renovated Aloha Garden Pavilion, Tales of the Kapa Moe will showcase Hawaiian chanting and hula, handmade costumes, an aerial performance and a fire knife dance.

“We are thrilled to introduce Tales of the Kapa Moe, which has been designed exclusively for The Ritz-Carlton Maui to celebrate the stories of the Hawaiian people,” said Andrew Rogers, general manager of The Ritz-Carlton Maui. “Our guests have always appreciated the authentic cultural experiences at our resort, and this is the perfect way for them to enjoy something new and unique.”

“Our dreams spark magic and inspiration,” said kumu hula and cultural practitioner Pono Murray, who created the show. “In Tales of the Kapa Moe, the stories of our ancestors come alive in a night of excitement, creativity and wonder. This mesmerizing experience goes above and beyond the expected lūʻau, yet remains deeply rooted within the rich and powerful presentations of Hawaiʻi. The chanting is live, costuming is handmade, and dances are sultry, vibrant and explosive.”

In addition to a dazzling theatrical show, Tales of the Kapa Moe will feature a fresh flower lei greeting, ʻukulele and hula lessons, ʻulu maika (Hawaiian bowling) games, and local crafts. A gourmet island-style dinner will include items like whole roasted pork, braised beef short ribs, huli huli chicken, and a create-your-own poke bar, along with handcrafted cocktails.

Hāna Limu Festival. File photo credit Manuel Mejia.

Nā Mamo O Mū‘olea announced that the Hāna Limu Festival returns to Hāna Bay Beach Park at Kapueokahi on July 15, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The 12th Hāna Limu Festival returns to its traditional Hāna Bay location for the first time since 2019.

“Our Hāna Limu Festival has grown and diversified over the years,” said Claudia Kalaola, Limu Festival Chair and co-founder of Nā Mamo O Mū‘olea. “More like-minded organizations are joining the festivities and adding a variety of fun and interesting activities that compliment our limu and educational theme.”

“Moving the Festival from the Hawaiian Moon Calendar season of Hoʻoilo (winter) to Kauwela (summer) allows us to take advantage of more favorable ocean conditions for some of these new activities, especially our Limu Surveys in three different moku of East Maui. With better conditions, we can collect a wider variety of Hawaiian Limu for our identification, educational and cultural activities.”

This year’s Festival spotlights the Limu Kala. Golden-brown and speckled, Limu Kala was used to heal physical and emotional wounds. “Kala,” which means “to forgive,” is a central component of hoʻoponopono, the traditional Hawaiian conflict resolution process. Limu Kala was recently named the official Hawaiʻi State Limu after being signed into law by Governor Josh Green, M.D.

The ʻOlelo Noʻeau (Hawaiian proverb) “E ‘ai i kekahi, E kāpī i kekahi,”  (Eat some, Salt some), is the motto this year, eloquently expressing the theme of sustainability. Nā Mamo O Mū‘olea’s mission is to restore and maintain marine resources for the benefit, education, and enjoyment of the community and future generations.

The Limu Festival will feature live limu demonstrations, hands-on activities for youth, Hawaiian music, hula by a local hālau, a silent auction, cultural craft vendors, food, and t-shirts that feature a limu kala print by Maui artist Gwen Arkin.

Hāna residents and limu experts from across the pae ʻāina will conduct limu surveys at four locations along the Hāna Coast on the morning of the Festival. They will share their ʻike, observations, and limu collections with keiki and other festival-goers.

Organized by Hāna residents, the Limu Festival is designed to promote a deeper awareness of native limu and to make people mindful of their kuleana and role in ensuring that ocean resources remain abundant for future generations.

Collaborating partners and co-sponsors who help with the event include The Nature Conservancy of Hawaiʻi, Kuaʻāina Ulu ʻAuamo and the Maui Nui Makai Network.

The event focuses on the inherent connections between the health of limu, fish, plants, and Hawaiian culture. Native limu is essential, not only as an ‘ono (delicious), nutritious part of the traditional Hawaiian diet but for its vital role in the health of the nearshore ecosystem, serving as the base of the food chain and providing food and shelter for herbivore fish and invertebrates.

Each year, funds raised through a silent auction at the Festival enable Nā Mamo O Mūʻolea to award the Isabella Aiona Abbott Scholarship to Hāna students who wish to pursue further education in marine biology, natural resource management, and Hawaiian studies.

Nā Mamo O Mūʻolea is a nonprofit group made up of residents and families of Mūʻolea. Its mission is to perpetuate traditional management of the Mūʻolea ahupuaʻa and, through a lease agreement with the County of Maui, to restore and maintain Mūʻolea’s natural, cultural, scenic, historic, and marine resources for the benefit, education, and enjoyment of community and future generations.

Organizations that will present educational activities at the Festival include Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project, NOAA Marine Mammal Center, Haleakala National Park, The Nature Conservancy, Hawaii Wildlife Fund, Kīpahulu ʻOhana, Nā Moku ʻAupuni ʻO Koʻolau Hui, Surfrider Foundation, Coral Reef Alliance, Kahanu Garden, Ocean Era, and the DLNR – Maui Department of Aquatic Resources.

Organizers thanked sponsors for their continued support, including the County of Maui, Hawaiʻi Community Foundation, Maui Nui Makai Network, The Nature Conservancy and Kuaʻāina Ulu ʻAuamo.

The Night at the Museum sleepover program is for families with children in Grades 1 to 8 (older and younger siblings are welcome). A guardian must be present.

New Maui book reveals untold history of Māʻalaea with rare photos, maps, illustrations https://mauinow.com/2023/06/28/new-maui-book-reveals-untold-history-of-ma%ca%bbalaea-with-rare-photos-maps-illustrations/ https://mauinow.com/2023/06/28/new-maui-book-reveals-untold-history-of-ma%ca%bbalaea-with-rare-photos-maps-illustrations/#respond Wed, 28 Jun 2023 18:00:00 +0000 https://admin.mauinow.com/?p=419256
A rare photograph showing troop landing ships in Mā’alaea waters practicing for their invasion of Saipan during World War II are among many archival items displayed in the book “Mā’alaea: The Untold Story of Maui’s Historic Crossroads.”

What began as a slide show three years ago at a community event has turned into a gem of a book about Maui history: “Māʻalaea: The Untold Story of Maui’s Historic Crossroads.”

“The slide show was just so amazing,” recalled Lynn Britton, president of the Māʻalaea Village Association. “It’s really a treasure trove of history. I said we just have to have it in a book.”

The result is a 190-page book with more than 240 photographs, illustrations and maps—some of which will be on display at a book release celebration at the Maui Ocean Center on June 29, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Registration is required at the Maui Ocean Center or the public can watch the celebration on livestream at youtube.com/@mauioceancenter by clicking on the “live” tab.

Author Lucienne De Naie, who presented the slide show, and editor Rita Goldman will be on hand with the many people who rallied behind the book project. De Naie will sign books at the Maui Ocean Center’s Ocean Treasures gift shop from 7 to 8 p.m.

Lucienne De Naie

De Naie, chairperson of the Sierra Club Maui Group and vice president of Maui Tomorrow, has an interest in a the history of Maui and its environment. She said Hawaiian expert Ed Linsey was the first to get her interested in looking at the history of Māʻalaea. De Naie has helped to research other histories of Maui regional areas such as Mākena, but this is her first published book.

The book is a delicious slice of natural history and the human migration upon a fertile land that had koa trees in the upslope of Kealia Pond 1,000 years ago, taro paddies in mountain valleys, an airfield, a harbor where seaplanes delivered mail and beaches where marines practiced landings before their invasion of Saipan in World War II.

Just as importantly, it has profiles of distinguished area residents, including renowned botanist Isabella Iona Abbott, the first Lady of Limu of the Bishop Museum, A&B executive Robert Bruce, Territorial Judge Wendell Crockett, Shinto Revs. Masao and Torako Arine, and hapa-Hawaiian descendants of Irish-born attorney George Richardson.

De Naie said a major challenge was to gather information during the COVID-19 pandemic when libraries and other institutions were closed. She credited Britton with helping her open doors to archives and working with then Councilwoman Kelly King to secure $15,000 in Maui County funds to help get the book published.

There are nuggets of facts that bring a deeper understanding of Hawaiian culture, including an explanation by researcher Hokuao Pelligrino of the boundaries of the traditional ahupua’a land division of Waikapu, which included the coastal lands of Māʻalaea—a sustainable system from the mountains to the sea.

Part of the name of Māʻalaea refers to the red clay “alae” that was once gathered from its rocky formations on land, and in the sea.

Copies of the book will be provided to schools and libraries in Maui County.

For more information on “Māʻalaea: The Untold Story of Maui’s Historic Crossroad,” contact the Māʻalaea Village Association at maalaeavillageassociation.org.

The book, with graphic design by Patti Narrowe and book cover by Cynthia Conrad will be sold at the Ocean Treasurers gift shop and online at mauioceancenter.org.

It also will be available at the A&B Sugar Museum, Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge, Māʻalaea General Store and the Lahaina Restoration Foundation. Native Books on Oʻahu also will carry the book.
