The official bracket for the 2023 Maui Jim Maui Invitational college basketball tournament has been released. This year marks the event’s 40th anniversary, and takes place Nov. 20-22, 2023 at the Lahaina Civic Center on Maui.

Monday’s matchups will feature Tennessee squaring off against Syracuse, and Purdue taking on Gonzaga in the morning session. In the afternoon section of the bracket, Kansas will face host Chaminade, followed by UCLA and Marquette going head-to-head in the nightcap.

All 12 games of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational will be televised on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU, and also available on the ESPN app.

“This year’s Maui Jim Maui Invitational field is one of the most celebrated and special groups of teams we have put together in the 40 year history of this Tournament,” said Dave Odom, Tournament Chairman. “This field has the potential of producing multiple NCAA teams come March, and we could not be more excited about the programs and talent that will pack the Lahaina Civic Center this year. It’s definitely going to be a can’t-miss showdown for fans on-island and tuning in from home.”

Combined, the eight teams boast 259 NCAA Tournament appearances, 17 NCAA Tournament championship titles, and two AP Coach of the Year award winners – Mark Few (2017) and Bill Self (2009, 2016).

Seven of the 2023 participants are ranked in the top 45 of all-time winningest schools, with six of the teams advancing to the 2022-23 NCAA Tournament, earning at least a four seed. Gonzaga made it all the way to the Elite Eight, while Tennessee and UCLA earned a spot in the Sweet 16.

Five of the 2023 Maui teams won their conference’s regular season titles last season after spending multiple weeks in the top 25 national rankings throughout the year. Additionally, four of the eight programs are returning Maui Jim Maui Invitational Champions, most recently Gonzaga in 2018 and Kansas in 2019 and 2015.

This year’s event will also feature the reigning 2023 National Player of the Year, Zach Edey (Purdue), along with one of the nation’s top transfers – Kansas center Hunter Dickinson. Ryan Nembhard (Gonzaga) will be making his second-straight Maui appearance after transfering from Creighton, last year’s runner-up to Arizona, for his final year of eligibility.

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of this event, the Maui Jim Maui Invitational and its partners are making a trip to witness the ‘Maui Magic’ possible through the Maui Jim Maui Invitational Fan Sweepstakes. One lucky fan and a guest will receive two All-Tournament tickets, two Stadium Club hospitality passes, a five-night stay at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa, 160,000 HawaiianMiles from Hawaiian Airlines, a gift card good for two pairs of Maui Jim sunglasses and an exclusive tour and lunch at Maui Brewing Company. The sweepstakes runs from July 20 to Aug. 20, 2023. To enter, or to view the complete list of rules and regulations, fans must visit mauiinvitational.com/sweepstakes.

After a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the 24th edition of the Molokaʻi-2-Oʻahu Paddleboard World Championships or M2O, returns to the Kaʻiwi Channel with an international field on Sunday, July 30, 2023.

Only 250 men and women qualify to compete in the 32-mile downwind challenge, competing in the disciplines of prone paddleboard, stand-up paddleboard, SUP Foil and Wing Foil.

The event is presented by the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority through the Signature Events Program

“We are so excited by the response and momentum for our return to racing this year,” said Mike Takahashi, the race director and founder of the event. “Over half of the athletes entered are first time entrants, mostly in the prone category, which is a testament to the renewed growth in the sport. The FOIL divisions have offered M2O new opportunities with so many of our SUP athletes crossing over. Can’t wait to get back in the channel to witness some great racing.”

Prone Paddleboard Race

Prone paddleboarding is experiencing a resurgence at this year’s M2O. Leading the men’s field is Australian Stewart McLachlan, 35, who has won M2O four times in the stock category.

McLachlan will challenge countryman Campbell Guthrie, 24, in this year’s unlimited paddleboard category, where athletes paddle longer, sleeker vessels compared to a stock paddleboard. Guthrie was the 2019 runner up in the stock category at M2O.

The 2021 Catalina Classic winner, 27-year-old Scott Clausen from Surfside, California enters the unlimited race. This will be Clausen’s first attempt at M2O.

At the age of 60, Mick DiBetta (AUS), M2O champion from 1997, will compete in his 23rd M2O in the unlimited category. Matt Sack, an esteemed North Shore lifeguard, is the only athlete to compete solo every year the race has been held.

McLachlan’s move to unlimited division leaves the stock paddleboard field open for emerging talents. Top performances at M2O have been recorded by Australian Callum Sutton, 22, and Kyle Smith, 40, from California.

The majority of men’s stock race is comprised of first timers to M2O like Toa Pere. The 14-year-old comes from a family of excellent paddleboards, and Pere has been excelling in Hawaii’s downwind races like the M2O Bluewater Classic.

In the women’s races, Australian Lizzie Welborn is the lone competitor in the unlimited category. If conditions are favorable, the 24-year-old’s race against the clock will be fueled by her experience as a three-time M2O competitor and the possibility of breaking countrywoman Harriet Brown’s record for 4 hours, 50 minutes, 58 seconds. Welborn finished second to Brown in her past three races at M2O.

In the stock race, Liz Hunter, Allison Schillinger and Katrina Madill are the odds-on favorites. This year’s race will be the first attempt at M2O for all three athletes. Hunter, 36, from Imperial Beach, California arrives as a three-time champion at the Catalina Classic.

Stand Up Paddleboard Race

SUP Phenom Mo Freitas, 26, from Hawaiʻi returns to M2O in the unlimited category after a podium finish in the 2019 stock race. Yusuke Hyogo from Japan and Italy’s Tommaso Pampinella will challenge for top honors. Kosuke had a dominating win at the recent Moloka‘i Holokai, which crosses the Pailolo Channel between the islands of Moloka‘i and Maui.

Seasoned M2O athlete and hailing from Hawai‘i Kiyomi Sheppard, 50, will take her board for a joy ride as she will paddle unchallenged in the stock SUP race.

SUP Foil

Maui’s Kai Lenny, 30, leads the men’s field in the foil discipline after dominating the 2018 and 2019 editions of M2O. Australian James Casey, 30, the reigning M2O SUP champion, will cross over to foil, competing against the 2019 foil runner up Jeffrey Spencer, 22, from Hawai‘i.

Adding to the foil race are the top three finishers from the recent Moloka‘i Holokai. Kane De Wilde, 22, bested Andrew Gibbons, 24, by just 37 seconds in the 27-mile race. Edoardo Tanas, 22, from Italy finished third, just seconds behind Gibbons.

In the women’s foil race, Annie Reickert, 22, returns to defend her title from 2019, Reickert will be up against M2O SUP champion Andrea Moller who knows the channel well. Included in this mix is Olivia Pana, 32, from France and youngster Gabriella Bella, 19, from Hawai‘i who each finished second and third respectively in this year’s Moloka‘i Holokai.

Wing Foil

The Wing Foil race is a new discipline to M2O this year with 18 Foilers, a larger field than the entire Foil field in 2019. Zane Schweitzer, 32, returns to the channel in a new category after years of racing experience in the Ka‘iwi channel on SUP. The winged race features teenagers Finn Spencer, 19, and Bobo Gallagher, 14.

The women’s Wing Foil division will be led by 46-year-old Nani Dalene. Dalane is coming off a solid performance at the Moloka‘i Holokai and a win at the M2O Bluewater Classic last summer.

Race Day Schedule – Sunday July 30, 2023

Founded in 1997, M2O has grown from a grassroots challenge for the legendary lifeguards of O‘ahu to the premiere event in the sport of paddleboarding. The race annually crowns world champions in the two disciplines of traditional (prone) and stand-up (SUP) paddleboarding.

In 2018, a hydrofoil division was added to welcome the evolution of technology in the SUP.

Connecting the islands of Moloka‘i and O‘ahu, the 32-mile race crosses the Ka‘iwi Channel, also known as the Moloka‘i Channel and Channel of Bones. Men and women from more than 20 countries will face strong currents as they navigate the fastest downwind route over one of the most beautiful and powerful channels in the world.

Athletes rid mid-channel waves that can crest more than 12 feet and carry paddlers hundreds of meters.

M2O starts in Kepuhi Bay on the northwest shore of Moloka‘i and finishes in Maunalua Bay on the southeast shore of O‘ahu. “The annual race is a deeply personal experience, challenging every paddler’s physical and mental endurance. Every finisher experiences an individual championship,” according to event organizers.

M2O is presented by the Hawai’i Tourism Authority with additional support from Spartan, Duke’s Waikiki, Kona Brewing Company, Futures Fins, Pauwela Beverage Company, dryrobe®, Talis Crew, Surftech, Bark Paddleboards, Ocean Paddler, DotVison, and Fin Film Company.

To enhance understanding about head safety, the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s College of Education is bringing concussion education and awareness to Maui, Oʻahu and Hawaiʻi Island communities between July and August.

The Maui workshop takes place July 17, 2023, at 6 p.m. at the Baldwin High School Multimedia Room.

Through free workshops hosted by COE’s Hawaiʻi Concussion Awareness Management Program, student athletes, coaches, parents and others can learn about the importance of head protection.

The program’s mission is to increase and share the body of knowledge of concussions. Every year, research projects are studied and investigated, and the information is used to help in the areas of prevention, treatment and recovery of concussions.

“Everyone has a role in the management of a concussed individual,” said Project Manager Troy Furutani. “Coaches, parents, officials, administrators and even the concussed individual themselves need to be aware of what their roles are and how to manage a concussion from time of injury to full recovery.”

The target audience for these summer workshops include: high school coaches, parents and administrators involved in interscholastic sports; intermediate school coaches, parents and administrators; and youth/community sports league organizations (ages 11–18 years).

Workshop locations and times

  • July 17, 2023, 6 p.m. at Baldwin High School Multimedia Room (Maui)
  • July 18, 2023, 6:30 p.m. at McKinley High School Auditorium (Oʻahu)
  • August 15, 2023, 5 p.m. at Keaʻau High School (Hawaiʻi Island)

Both teams followed a strategy common to this year’s fleet: a North Pacific high pressure centered well north of its usual position allowed teams to closely follow the rhumb line for most of the race, thereby minimizing the distance to Hawaiʻi. Only in the last few days on the west side of the racecourse do the 15-20 knot breezes shift more to the east from the northeast, prompting teams to sail north of the rhumb line on starboard tack to stay in the best wind velocity before gybing to port to make their final approaches to Hawaiʻi.

These last 1000 miles to the finish have the champagne sailing conditions that Transpac is famous for: clear days and starlit nights of downwind sailing under spinnaker, with the occasional shift to gybe to reduce the distance to Diamond Head.

With the multihulls finished, participants focus on who will be the first monohull to cross the finish line. Bill McKinley’s Ker 46+ DENALI3 is a strong contender for this honor.

With 485 miles to go at 7 a.m. PDT and at boat speeds of 11-12 knots, this fast carbon race boat and it’s Michigan-based team who started a week ago in Ocean Navigator Division 4 will soon pass the three leading cruiser/racer teams of Tuesday starters in Boatswains Locker Division 7 who are sailing at a 2-3 knot slower pace. If DENALI3 continues at the current rate she could be at Diamond Head before dawn on Saturday.

Once these and all Transpac finishers arrive in Hawaiʻi, they are greeted with the warm hospitality of Aloha. More than 100 Hawaiʻi volunteers help make everyone feel welcomed and embraced on having completed one the ocean race.

This hospitality and support takes many forms: the Race Committee who are 24/7 stationed at Diamond Head Lighthouse to witness finishes; the escort vessel that leads finishers from Diamond Head into the Ala Wai Harbor and to their assigned slip, day or night, sun or rain; those who process the boat’s paperwork formalities and inspection on entering Hawaiʻi; photographers who are on call 24/7 to take crew photos; and the volunteers who stay on watch at Transpac YC’s two-story headquarters known as “The Shack” positioned in the Ala Wai Marina where all questions from the teams and their fans can be answered.

There are also the many members and staff of the partner yacht clubs on Oʻahu- Hawaiʻi Yacht Club, Waikīkī Yacht Club and Kāneʻohe Yacht Club- that plan and execute the parties and award ceremonies; those that organize and take care of the dozens of amazing perpetual trophies that are an important part of Transpac history – and determine who is eligible to win these awards; and finally those that organize each team’s Aloha parties to welcome crew members back.

All entries in Transpac can be tracked on the YB system, sponsored by Pasha Hawaiʻi. The positions, speeds and headings of each entry can be found on this system on either the browser of app versions. There is a built-in 4 hour delay for each entry, except when within 200 miles of the finish when the tracker goes live.
