A photo depicts a family-owned business located in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles. The business started in the 1920s, shut down during World War II and reopened in 1950.

“Paper Chase,” a documentary film that delves into the history of Japanese-American news media, will be screened on Sunday, Aug. 13, at the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center. Free showings are scheduled for 11 a.m. and at 2 p.m. at the center located at 665 Kahului Beach Road.

Seating is limited. For reservations, call 808-244-6862 by 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11.

Presented by the Zentoku Foundation, “Paper Chase” (2021) unveils the remarkable, yet relatively unknown, story of Japanese and Japanese-American journalists who have chronicled the Japanese immigrant community’s experiences in the United States and Canada since the late 1800s. These publications have played a vital role in bringing together Japanese communities and celebrating their shared heritage.

In an undated photo, Japanese samurai are shown studying a map while outfitted with their swords. Since 1895, journalists who produced community newspapers have covered the people and events of Japanese in America. This photo is included in the Zentoku Foundation’s presentation of “Paper Chase,” a documentary film that delves into the history of Japanese-American news media.

The Zentoku Foundation, dedicated to promoting and strengthening Japanese-American culture, seeks to create pathways for each generation to connect with one another. Through “Paper Chase,” the foundation shares inspiring stories that shed light on the struggles and triumphs of the Japanese-American community.

One of the prominent publications featured in the documentary is the Rafu Shimpo, the nation’s leading Japanese-American newspaper. Since its establishment in 1903 in Little Tokyo, in downtown Los Angeles, the Rafu Shimpo has been a trusted source of news and information for the Japanese-American community.

The executive producer of “Paper Chase” is Ellen Endo, former managing editor of the Rafu Shimpo. She will attend the NVMC showing in person and take questions from the audience following the presentation.

Reflecting on the history of Japanese immigrants, Endo tells how early immigrants dispersed across North America, with some working in farming and others on railroads. As she states on discovernikkei.org: Japanese newspapers began to emerge in different regions, initially publishing news from Japan but soon evolving into a vital resource for the community’s needs, such as job opportunities and housing options.

These Japanese publications focused on news that often went overlooked or ignored by mainstream media. However, in today’s digital and social media-dominated landscape, Japanese media outlets, including the Hawaii Herald, The Rafu Shimpo, Chicago Shimpo, North American Post, Nikkei West, and Nichi Bei Weekly, face significant challenges to their survival.

The Hawaii Herald, which traces its roots back to 1912 when Fred Kinzaburo Makino founded the Hawaii Hochi to serve the Japanese community, has had its own transformative journey. In 1942, following Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, the publication changed its name to be more “American.”

“Paper Chase” is an extraordinary testament to the resilience and perseverance of Japanese-American news media throughout history. By bringing this documentary to the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center, the Zentoku Foundation honors the legacy of Japanese-American journalism and aims to inspire future generations.

The Nisei Veterans Memorial Center ignites the potential in people by inspiring them to find the hero in themselves through the legacy of the Nisei Veterans. NVMC owns and manages an intergenerational campus on “Go For Broke Place” in Kahului that serves as a home for Kansha Preschool, Maui Adult Day Care Center’s Oceanview facility, the Stanley Izumigawa Resource Center, the NVMC Education Center and Archives. Adaptations Dance Theater presents 5th annual ‘Bring it Home’ dance concert Aug. 11-13 https://mauinow.com/2023/07/23/adaptations-dance-theater-presents-5th-annual-bring-it-home-dance-concert-aug-11-13/ https://mauinow.com/2023/07/23/adaptations-dance-theater-presents-5th-annual-bring-it-home-dance-concert-aug-11-13/#respond Mon, 24 Jul 2023 03:30:00 +0000 https://mauinow.com/?p=421534

Maui’s contemporary dance company, Adaptations Dance Theater, presents its fifth annual “Bring it Home” dance concert Aug. 11 to 13 at the historic ‘Iao Theater. The culmination of Adaptations Dance Theater’s performance programs, “Bring it Home” brings together a professional cast of resident and guest dance artists to share their craft with their home community and celebrate the artistry of Maui’s own.

Coming back from a three-year, pandemic-induced hiatus, the return of “Bring it Home” not only signals the ability to return to the theatrical stage where productions can benefit from interior sound, lighting, and set design; but it also aligns with Adaptations Dance Theater’s 10-year anniversary as a nonprofit organization. With so much to celebrate, this “Bring it Home” season includes its first evening-length work.

Performances:

  • Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. (Opening Night)
  • Aug. 12 at 7 p.m.
  • Aug. 13 at 2 p.m.
Company dancer Katie Istvan Whiticar performs in Bring it Home 2019’s “Ellipse”, choreographed by FLOCK. (PC: Ajja DeShayne)

As opposed to a compilation of shorter pieces, an evening-length work requires the physical and emotional endurance of the dancers to carry a deeper narrative that creates and resolves the complexities of a singular story. In preparation for this momentous task, Co-Choreographers Hallie Hunt and Ali McKeon Pineo (who also serve as the company’s co-artistic directors) began exploring ideas with resident dancers during Adaptations Dance Theater’s SEED choreographic residency in May.

“We are anticipating the collaboration of our ‘Bring it Home’ cast to share their unique perspectives in the studio space so we can co-create a work that is biographical for each of the participants, and with great hope that the audience will find moments of themselves while witnessing the work,” said Hunt.

The “Bring it Home” residency with all eight cast members participating lasts just over three weeks and leads directly into performance weekend, fostering an intense and focused environment in which the full cast can contribute to the rest of the choreographic process.

“The ideas are wild and whimsical, and include outrageous props that give each section a center piece,” Hunt said. “It’s going to be a rollercoaster – buckle in, audience!”

This year’s cast features three guest artists whose ties to Maui range from the professional to the personal and back again: Wailuku born-and-raised dance artist Emily McKeon, previous Maui resident dancer Yasmine Lindskog Visanko, and dance instructor and choreographer John Barclay, who makes his Bring it Home debut this year after having worked with Pineo on her CRAFT Dance Series and participated in Adaptations Dance Theater’s launch of PIVOT, its young professionals’ intensive program, last summer. Full bios on each cast member can be viewed on the company’s Instagram @adaptationsdancetheater.

“Bring it Home” aims to maintain a two-way bridge between Maui and the rest of the dance world, bringing back to Maui those who have left the island in pursuit of careers elsewhere, while simultaneously aspiring to influence a field-wide shift in dance that celebrates the individual and brings physical and mental health to the forefront of the dance space.

“The biggest lesson I have learned being a part of this company since its inception is to focus on relationships,” said Hunt. “ADT was founded on friendship, and building and sustaining relationships has become the guiding light for our organization. Centering respect, care, and support, and making decisions that uplift everyone involved- that’s how we know we are making the right choices.”

Those who would like to witness Adaptations Dance Theater’s creative process can attend an open rehearsal on July 29 from 1 – 1:30 p.m. that is free and open to the public; registering in advance is highly encouraged at AdaptationsDanceTheater.com/bring-it-home.

Tickets for “Bring it Home” range from $20-35, or $16-28 for students and seniors, and can be purchased at MauiOnStage.com. Audiences are welcome to stay for a Q&A session with members of the cast at the conclusion of each performance.

The “Bring it Home” season is supported in part by the County of Maui’s Office of Economic Development, the Atherton Family Foundation, and a growing network of individual and business donors who recognize the power of the performing arts and Adaptations Dance Theater’s mission to sustain a professional home for contemporary dance on Maui.

In anticipation of “Meg 2: The Trench” on Aug. 2 , audiences can enjoy what many consider to be the greatest shark film of all time.  When a young woman is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) wants to close the beaches, but mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town. Ichthyologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled ship captain Quint (Robert Shaw) offer to help Brody capture the killer beast, and the trio engage in an epic battle of man vs. nature.

Aug. 2 – The Endless Summer (1965)

The crown jewel to ten years of Bruce Brown surfing documentaries. Brown follows two young surfers around the world in search of the perfect wave, and ends up finding quite a few in addition to some colorful local characters.

Aug. 9 – Big Wednesday (1978)

Three California beach buddies begin to realize there is more to life than waxing down their surfboards as they ditch their alcoholic and unruly ways to go fight in the Vietnam War.

Aug. 16 – Riding Giants (2004)

Part sports history, part thrill ride, skate boarder Stacy Peralta’s documentary pays homage to the brave, foolish surfers who dare ride the world’s biggest waves. Peralta lays out the evolution of big-wave surfing from the ’50s to today, touching upon changing trends and the
constant search for ever larger waves. Then he shifts his focus to a handful of contemporary surfing superstars, among them Jeff Clark, pioneer of San Francisco’s remote waves, and Laird Hamilton, known for tow-in riding.

Aug. 23 – The North Shore (1987)

Seemingly more popular today, than its original theatrical release, Rick, before entering art school next autumn, he sets out to spend the summer surfing at Hawaiʻi. He knows nothing about the local habits, what causes him some starting problems, but by chance he gets a room in the house of guru Chandler. He teaches him the difference between ‘soul surfers’ and those who surf for fame and money. Also he manages to get the attention of a beautiful young native.

Aug. 30 – Five Summer Stories (1972)

This is the 50th Anniversary, digitally remastered “Final Director’s Cut”, available for the first time ever on the big screen, with the original, remastered soundtrack from The Beach Boys & Honk. It’s been called the finest surf movie ever made. The film’s unusual format- a montage of vignettes or stories- perfectly captured a fractured era in which an explosion of creativity and revolutionary change was shaking down the old order, taking the sport of surfing into new and unknown territory. Although Five Summer Stories went through several (and increasingly popular) incarnations, the fundamental story remained the story of 1972: that the pure, innocent joy of surfing was symbolic of man’s best possibilities on an Earth without war or politics or environmental destruction.

“There is something very special about watching these classic cinematic masterpieces on the big screen with friends and family,” said Lyndon Golin of Regency Theatres.

Ticket Prices for Water Wednesdays are $8 per seat.  The Regency Wharf Cinemas, Lahaina is located at 658 Front Street in Lahaina on the 2nd floor of the Wharf Cinema Center.

Film documents environmentalists’ crusade to halt sewage disposal into Maui waters https://mauinow.com/2023/07/16/film-documents-environmentalists-crusade-to-halt-sewage-disposal-into-maui-waters/ https://mauinow.com/2023/07/16/film-documents-environmentalists-crusade-to-halt-sewage-disposal-into-maui-waters/#respond Sun, 16 Jul 2023 16:38:12 +0000 https://admin.mauinow.com/?p=420752

Filmmaker Alli Waters tells the story about the successful US Supreme Court fight to force Maui County to stop polluting nearshore waters by disposing of treated sewage through injection wells.

“Under Waters: A Maui Victory” was released through the Maui Film Festival’s Speed Of Light Virtual Cinema, and will be shown on that online site through July 30.

Alli Waters

Through underwater ocean videography, Waters gives voice to marine creatures beneath Maui waters with gorgeous footage of humpback whales, dolphins, turtles, reef fish and the coral reef.

The film also highlights footage of the devastating effect of the pollution at Kahekili Beach Park “Airport Beach” in Kāʻanapali, where nutrients and chemicals from the nearby sewage treatment plant enter the ocean.

The 45-minute documentary is partially Water’s personal essay and a tribute to a coalition that fought for decades to get Maui County to comply with environmental ocean pollution laws. The leaders in the effort included Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund founder Hannah Bernard, Earth Justice Legal Defense Fund attorney David Henkins, the Sierra Club Maui, Surfrider Foundation Maui, and West Maui Preservation Association attorney Lance Collins.

It’s also a tribute to Waters, Maui’s Akakū TV and its community classes where she first learned to record and assemble video footage into stories.

Her career has moved from taking underwater photographs of visitors on a Trilogy sailing excursion 30 years ago to working as a freelance videographer, editor and producer for clients such as Xterra, HBO and the Travel Channel.

The documentary is generous in not naming politicians who ignored or denied the sewage was causing algae growth and killing reefs, and a flawed study that seemed to support their assertions.

Of the more than 4 million gallons daily of treated sewage entering the wastewater plant in Lahaina, 18 to 38% was re-used on land for irrigation earlier this year. The rest has been channeled into injection wells where they diffuse with soil and groundwater, a portion entering the ocean and contributing to algae blooms and killing the reefs.

Eventually, a US Geological Survey study published in 2013 confirmed the pollution and traced its path from sewage treatment plants in Lahaina, Kīhei and Kahului into the ocean.

In 2021, the Supreme Court affirmed lower courts’ decisions that the county was in violation of the Clean Water Act and required a permit.

The County of Maui was forced to take action. It now has released a draft permit that proposes using more treated water from its Lahaina Wastewater Treatment Plant for irrigation, which would reduce ocean pollution. The public can now comment on that draft permit.

Waters began her film project during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and said the film kept getting longer as she added more interviews.

“I hope this film inspires people to take action in their community to stop the pollution of our precious oceans and streams,” she said.

MACC Biennial 2023 Award Recipients: Claudia Johnson, Sally French, Susan Thomas. PC: Doug DeBoer via MACC

With the opening of Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s inaugural edition of the MACC Biennial in
Schaefer International Gallery, running now through Aug. 26, the Center has announced the recipients of three prestigious awards for MACC Biennial 2023.

  • Kaua‘i artist Sally French was named the winner of the Juror’s Choice Award of $5,000 for her mixed media work, Futterwacken.
  • O‘ahu artist Susan Thomas received the Award of Excellence in 2-Dimensional Media for $2,500 for her piece Flower.
  • Maui artist Claudia Johnson received the Award of Excellence in 3-Dimensional Media for $2,500 for her sculptural work, Solace.

All three award winners were determined by the juror of the exhibition, Dr. Andreas Marks, who selected for exhibit 40 artworks by 38 artists statewide, representing a cross-disciplinary spectrum of conceptual depth, technical prowess, and explorative forms.

The exhibit is open from Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with free admission.

MACC Biennial is a new, statewide juried exhibition showcasing the voices of artists from across Hawai‘i through an open call for contemporary work. Artists residing in Hawai‘i had the opportunity to submit newly created work that expresses relevant ideas and interprets our human connection. The call was open to a variety of media including painting, printmaking, drawing, sculpture, textile, mixed media, photography, video, installation, and digital media.

Entries were considered over the course of a competitive two-round jurying process, with all works reviewed digitally for round 1, and selected works proceeding to round 2 for in-person observation at four island sites on O‘ahu, Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i Island, and Maui.

The juror for this exhibition was Dr. Andreas Marks, the Mary Griggs Burke Curator of Japanese and Korean Art and Director of the Clark Center for Japanese Art at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Dr. Marks, who has curated exhibitions in a variety of media from pre-modern to contemporary art and visual culture at 38 museums, said, “Contemporary art should be free and without boundaries, but it can respond to the past to lead to new findings. Most importantly, it has to excite with compelling ideas and accomplished technique.”

Sally French’s mixed media work, Futterwacken, is a tour de force of materials (atomized acrylic, wax pencil, India ink, rhinestones, faux fur, rag paper, sanded polymer resin) taking an unconventional approach in the form of two panels installed across a corner wall.

A prominent artist and the recipient of the MACC Biennial 2023 Juror’s Choice Award, French was born in Stockton, California and currently lives and works in Kalaheo, Kaua‘i. She has exhibited extensively in Hawai‘i for over 50 years, including at Honolulu Museum of Art, The Contemporary Museum, First Hawaiian Center and Hawai‘i State Art Museum – with numerous artworks in the Art in Public Places Collection.

She was featured in the Schaefer International Gallery exhibit Wunderlust – The Keeper’s Tale in 2008, served as a juror for Schaefer Portrait Challenge 2012, and was a selected artist in SPC 2015 and 2022, with her self-portrait receiving top accolades with the Jurors’ Choice Award in SPC 2022.

“These significant recognitions dignify the Biennial as an important new opportunity for our local arts community,” said French. “I am so honored that Juror Andreas Marks selected Futterwaken as the Juror’s Choice Award for MACC Biennial 2023. The award contributes greatly to the continuation of my studio practice, and the acknowledgement confirms that my work is understood and relevant. I am especially grateful, as Futterwaken addresses the sensitive issue of the usage of nuanced gender pronouns with its differing points of view, as displayed by two panels on opposing walls that meet at a protruding large mouth, signaling that conversation will bring a better understanding of each other.”

MACC Biennial 2023 Award of Excellence in Two-Dimensional Media to Susan Thomas for her entry, Flower. PC: Doug DeBoer via MACC.

O‘ahu artist Susan Thomas was recognized with the Award of Excellence in Two-Dimensional Media for her large-scale mixed media work on paper, Flower. Of Thomas’ work, Dr. Marks said, “It is a bold move by Susan Thomas in times when there seems to be a fad for abstraction in contemporary art, to create the collage Flower based on a pattern using pre-manufactured shooting targets. The work is evocative of a mandala, a spiritual tool, and guides us to more awareness about current issues in the United States.”

Thomas received a BFA in glass from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa in 1992 and began a career as a conservation technician in the museum field shortly afterwards, which she continues to this day while maintaining an ongoing studio practice. Her work has been included in group and juried exhibitions throughout Hawai‘i, including Artists of Hawai‘i at Honolulu Museum of Art and multiple years of the Hawai‘i Craftsmen Annual Statewide Exhibition, where her work has received several awards.

Claudia Johnson of Maui received the Award of Excellence in Three-Dimensional Media for her sculptural work, Solace, assembled of bundles of strawberry guava and Java plum branches that were each painted in a tonal gradation.

“Art-making can be a healing process in challenging times, and Claudia Johnson’s Solace refers to that regenerative potential. The piece was constructed of seemingly simple but powerful elements that were connected through repetitive steps until the circle was complete,” said Dr. Marks.

Johnson received her MA in studio art with an emphasis on fiber sculpture from San Francisco State University, and after relocating to Maui, worked with Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center for over a decade as their Program and Exhibits Director.

She has exhibited her artwork in juried and invitational shows throughout Hawai‘i and the US for the last 30 years, including The Contemporary Museum Biennial of Hawai‘i Artists 2005 and Hawai‘i Art Now at Honolulu Museum of Art. She has been recognized with numerous awards and corporate commissions, with her work included in the Art in Public Places Collection of the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.

MACC Biennial is a new, statewide juried exhibition showcasing the voices of artists from across Hawai‘i through an open call for contemporary work. Artists residing in Hawai‘i had the opportunity to submit newly created work in a variety of media, with 40 artworks by 38 artists selected for exhibition.

Schaefer International Gallery is open during exhibitions from Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., as well as before select performances in Castle Theater and Yokouchi Pavilion. Admission is FREE and open to the public.
